Scripture: Mark 9:14–29
14 When they returned to their disciples, they saw a large crowd surrounding them, and another scholar arguing with them. 15 When the people saw Jesus, they were amazed and ran up to greet him. 16 He asked them, "What are you debating with them?" 17 One of the crowd answered him, "Teacher, I brought my son to you, and he is possessed by a mute ghost." 18 Wherever the ghost grabbed him and threw him down, he foamed at the mouth, gritted his teeth, and stiffened. I asked your disciples to cast out the demons, but they couldn't. 19 Jesus answered them, "Alas! O generation of unbelievers! How long have I been with you? How long will I put up with you? Bring him to me. "20 Then they brought the child to him. As soon as the ghost saw Jesus, he immediately drove the child crazy and fell to the ground, rolling with spit. 21 Jesus asked his father, "How long has it been since this happened to him?" "It's been like that since childhood," he said. 22 The devil often threw him into the fire and water to destroy him. If you can do anything, have mercy on us and help us. 23 Jesus said to him, "'If you can' ("If you can" some copies are written as 'If you can believe)—anything for those who believe! The father of the child immediately cried out, "I believe! But my faith is not enough, please help me. 25 When Jesus saw the crowd coming, he rebuked the filthy devil, saying, "Deaf and dumb, I command you to come out of him and not enter again. "26 The ghost shouted so loudly that the child jerked hard for a while and came out. The child seems to be dead, so many people say, "He's dead!" 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he stood up. 28 When Jesus entered the house, the disciples asked him privately, "Why can't we cast out the defiler?" 29 Jesus said to them, "This kind of devil cannot be cast out without prayer.
